Playing MP3's on Red Hat 9

All you really need to add the missing MP3 capability to Red Hat 9 is mpg123 or mpg321, which you can download from freshrpms.net: http://shrike.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=1436 . Once you've downloaded and installed it, try the command:

mpg123 /usr/share/apps/kbattleship/sounds/ship-player-shoot-water.mp3

and you should be rewarded with a satisfying sound effect.

Now you'll want a front end program, and here, it comes down to taste; the standard "Media Player" application in Red Hat 9 is xmms, but Red Hat removed the MP3 support. You can re-install it with the xmms-mp3 RPM, which you can obtain at http://shrike.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=1547. Just install that, start xmms, press Ctrl+P and disable the "MPEG Layer 1/2/3 Placeholder Plugin [librh_mp3.so]". If you like lean and mean, you might try waif (http://www.eds.org/~straycat/waif.html).
