This is a particularly neat trick I've been using for a while now. it allows creation of an ad-hoc virtual private network, usually without the need to install any special VPN software.

Basic syntax:

/usr/sbin/pppd updetach noauth silent nodeflate pty "/usr/bin/ssh root@remote-gw /usr/sbin/pppd nodetach notty noauth" ipparam vpn 10.0.0.1:10.0.0.254

or similar.
